Philippines: Ilocos Region Tourist Spots



Region 1, known as Ilocos region is located at the northwest part of Luzon, the biggest island of the country.

Aside from the nature itself, a lot of historical remains are found in this area and so review of the Philippines' history will help you while strolling in the region. Indigenous people also built places which have been considered to be tourist spots in the process.

Here is the list of the places you might want to go to while staying in Ilocos region.

First, let us start from the province of Ilocos Norte.


Paoay Church


Paoay church was build in the name of St. Augustine and is considered on the the UNESCO's List off World Heritage Site. This church is one of the epitomes of a Baroque architecture in the country. If you are inclined into some architectural building, then you should visit and discover the interior yourself.


Bangui Windmills

These windmills are located in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. These windmills are used as energy generator that would sustain the need of the people living in the nearby areas. This was not just for the energy production but in the long run, the place became famous and people started going there for some reason. To experience the windmills! Eventually, it became a tourist destination for travelers.



Paoay Lake

This must be a place bounded from pollution. This freshwater lake is a protected and preserved biodiversity hotspot. It is a place that really displays a beautiful landscape of the lands of Ilocos.


MalacaƱang of the North



MalacaƱang of the North, as it is called because this place is where the late President Ferdinand Marcos lived. It is his residence located in Paoay which also offers an awesome view of the Paoay Lake. This residence became a museum which showcase a lot of memorabilia left by the Marcos family.


Fort Ilocandia

Fort Ilocandia is the only 5-star hotel proudly standing in Ilocos Norte. This hotel offers great restaurants, variety of water sport, archery and the likes, and of course, very comfy bed to relax to after the very tiring exploration of the place. It also gives a tour on Suba sand dune nearby.



The Place of Pagudpud

The place of Pagudpud is sometimes called "The Boracay of the North". This place is known as it's fine, white sand beaches which are considered in the top beaches in the country. The place showcase it's natural beauty regarding on the talks of water and sunbathing. These beaches are not far away from the Bangui windmills so expect a view of the windmills while enjoying the water.



Next stop is Ilocos Sur.



Mestizo District

History remains when you are in this place. It is located in Vigan, It is a street that displays the ancestral homes and pre-colonial era architecture of the Philippines. Being in this places lets you experience the feeling of living a hundred years ago. The homes were built by the Chinese merchants who came to live in the city.


Palacio de Arzobispado

The other name for this is Archbishop's Palace. It was built in 1783 and served as the residence of the Nueva Segovie's Archbishop.It is the only archbishop residence from the 18th century that remains all over the country. The interior of the palace became a museum which shows archdiocesan archives, the throne room, manuscripts, and some antique portraits of the late bishops.


Burgos National Museum

Burgos National Museum was Padre Burgos' residence. It became a museum to showcase a lot of antiques during the GUMBURZA time in history. This museum also serves to depict a lot of Ilocano's antiquities and treasures and also their culture and society. Memorabilia of the martyr Padre Burgus is also being displayed in the museum.



Last stop is La Union & Pangasinan


Agoo-Damortis National Seashore Park

Located in Agoo, La Union, a National Park which is a protected area and is a biodiversity hotspot in the region.



Hundred Islands National Park

Located in Alaminos, Pangasinan, the Hundred Islands National Park shows a total of 124 islands during low tide and 123 islands during high tides.


Cape Bolinao's Lighthouse

This lighthouse was built in 1903 by the Americans. It gives signal to vessels passing by the nearby see and soon it became a tourist spot.



Manlaluag National Park

Manlaluag National Park is a forest area and was declared as a National Park in the 1940's. Aside from the tourists, a lot of scientists have been in and out of the place since it is a biodiversity area.


There are still several tourist spots I have not mentioned. Beaches and Baroque churches can be found aside from what I have mentioned. St. Paul's Cathedral, Santa Maria Church, San Juan beach and Our Lady of Manaoag Church are also located in this region and you might also want to see them.
